This exhibition looks at creating two fictious character ladened teams. The Harlem Harlequins and the St Kilda Slum dwellers. The artist thinks the roller Derby movement is freaking awesome. The revamp from the 1970's version has so many exciting elements. It wraps up physical theatre and a competitive sport into one package that shouts punk attitude.
Also it looks at allowing individual flare within the confines of a highly risky sport. More power to the movement. The exhibition also looks loosely at the origins of the movement through its ties to 1950's diner culture through the link of rollerskates. There are many hidden messages in the art about the artists home city as well with the background patterning on the floors and in the abstract forms behind the roller girls.
